What we did: Quality assurance by evaluating the various university services.

  1. What we did?
    1. The General Graduation Ceremony: Graduation ceremony held on 3rd December 2016.
    2. A survey of student: needs, feeling, student feeling, etc.
    3. A survey of student performances: by analysing the previous exam results.
    4. A survey of teachers’ performance: such skills, knowledge area, their needs, workloads, teaching times and convenience,
    5. A survey of teaching and learning methodologies: focusing on the curriculum
    6. A survey of learning resources: i.e. libraries, digital resources, teaching notes, etc.
    7. A survey of learning condition: such as equipment, how learning is delivered, learning, teaching technologies, i.e. overhead projector, online material, classroom/lab practicing material.
    8. A survey of learning environment: such as classrooms, library space, etc.
    9. A survey of how to improve research skills: focused on how to create an environment of research.
  2. The Result to date: Evaluating the quality of the university services, we have been successful doing the following:
    1. For Road-map: We have been using “Strategic Plan: A Five Year Strategic Plan for East Africa University Development (2017-2022)”
    2. Used SWOT analysis: As a process to identify our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
    3. Used analytical framework: To assesses what factors can help us improve our performances.
    4. Change: Determine where change is possible.
    5. Faculty/ College Restructuring Advice Plan: Based on how to improve the university performance.
  • Gap Analysis: ‘gap’ between the university’s current status
  1. The purpose: to identify the gap between our current situation and the future state that we want to reach, along with the tasks that we need to complete to close this gap.
  2. Identify our future state: analyse the current situation, and identify how to bridge the gap
  3. Our Strength: Having the largest infrastructure in Bosaso, Qardho, Erigabo, Buhodle, Garowe, Galkayo and Geldogob.
  4. Our Opportunity:
    • We can accommodate the largest number of students as we have the largest infrastructure.
    • We have the largest number of experienced teachers, some of them are doctors and professors.
  5. A survey of student: `
  6. We found the student needs by using a survey composed of 5 main parts. The result is amasing as it gave us an insight of student feeling, needs, requirement, hopes and future expectations..
  7. A survey of student performances:
  8. By analysing the previous exam results, we found that the students need strong basis on some particular subjects such as the languages (Arabic, English), mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, etc.
  9. We are planning to start from September 2017 with curricula which has the first term the basic building blog about learning. These include English, Arabic, Math, Physics, Biology and Chemistry.
  10. Survey of EAU Branches: Between Jan 31 – 07 Feb 2017: We went to visit four of EAU branches. These were: Qardho, Garowe, Gedogob and Galkayo. We collected some important information from the branches. These include:
  11. How to improve communication between the branches
  12. How to strengthen the collaboration between the branch teachers
  13. How teachers can share local source information.
  • A survey of teachers’ performance:
  1. We found skills, knowledge area, their needs, workloads, teaching times convenience.
  2. We found some useful information about teachers’ skills.
  3. We found that some teacher have been teaching more than 40 years.
  4. To make sure we appreciate these teachers, we have given them doctoral awards and the title of professorship.
  5. We promoted 7 teachers who have PhD as we provided them with the titles of Assistant Professors and Associate Professors.
  6. Currently, we have 20 Professors at EAU with various knowledge areas.
  • Survey of teaching and learning methodologies:
  1. Evaluating the learning and teaching programs. Here we focus on the curriculum development:
  2. On 16 February 2017 we held one day workshop entitled “Curriculum Development Workshop”
  3. The workshop has been very successful as we had delegates from Geldogob, Galkayo, Garowe, Buhodle, Erigabo and Bosaso.
  4. The 16 March 2017 is the week we expect feedbacks from the faculties about their curriculum development.
  5. We have planned to finish the revision and development of the curricula by the early June 2017. Our plan is to start the new academic year September 2017 with the new curricula.
  6. Survey of learning resources:
    1. We found that the library needs to be expanded to accommodate more material now present and some coming later.
  7. Survey of learning environments/ condition:
    1. We planned to introduce new equipment, books, learning notes, teaching technologies, i.e. overhead projector, online material, classroom/lab practicing material.
  8. Survey on how to create a research environment:
  9. We started a research certificate for teachers so they can learn the research skill.
  10. Today we are awarding those teachers who attended the research course.
  11. We are planning a new educational front called EAU Center of Excellence for Enterpenership Development. The centre aims:
  • To empower job seekers with ideas, passion and entrepreneurial skills with knowledge and experience
  • To run a series of programs which are being designed to build knowledge, provide mentoring and open up networking opportunities.
  • To link between industry, business and entrepreneurs.

  3. The 2nd EAU Public Health Conference: In the near future, we are planning to have the 2nd EAU Public Health Conference. The conference will focus on:
  • Current drought and its impact
  • Disease outbreak
  • Environmental hazards
  • Disaster resilience
  • Analysing the magnitude of drought impact
  • Solutions of how the country can equip itself from the impact of future national disaster
